Yankees Eyeing 2-Time All-Star to Bolster Starting Rotation

The New York Yankees are looking to replace their current first baseman, Anthony Rizzo, with another top defensive player. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees are planning to be very active in the free-agent market and are among the teams set to pursue Christian Walker, a three-time Gold Glove winner. Nightengale reports that at least six teams, including the Yankees, New York Mets, Washington Nationals, and Walker's current team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, are all interested in signing him.

Walker, who is 33 years old, has played for the Diamondbacks since 2017 and was their starting first baseman during their run to the 2023 World Series. In the 2023 season, he hit .251 with 26 home runs and 84 RBIs over 130 games. Although his power numbers have decreased slightly from his previous back-to-back 30-homer seasons, his defensive skills and leadership make him a highly sought-after player.

The Yankees’ decision to pursue Walker comes after they declined their $17 million club option on Anthony Rizzo for the 2025 season, leaving them in need of a new first baseman. While Walker’s strong defense and solid power numbers make him an attractive option, the Yankees may also be considering other high-upside targets to fill the position.
