What a Potential Trade for Jonathan Mingo Could Mean for the Cowboys' Future x
A trade involving Panthers' Jonathan Mingo could have important implications for the Dallas Cowboys. It may impact their strategy, either by altering their draft plans or by providing new opportunities for their offense or defense. The Cowboys could adjust their roster, strengthen specific positions, or address weaknesses based on the trade's outcome.
In 2018, the Dallas Cowboys were struggling with a 3-4 record. After a tough 20-17 loss to Washington, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, executive VP Stephen Jones, and VP of player personnel Will McClay met privately at FedEx Field to discuss the team’s future. The next day, they made a bold move, trading a first-round draft pick to the Oakland Raiders for wide receiver Amari Cooper. This trade sparked a turnaround for the team. The Cowboys went on to win seven of their next nine games, finishing the regular season with a 10-6 record and eventually winning a playoff game.
With the Cowboys struggling at a 3-5 record in 2024, and their playoff hopes fading fast, they made a move to improve their roster. On Tuesday, Dallas traded a 2025 fourth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers for wide receiver Jonathan Mingo and a 2025 seventh-round pick. Mingo, a second-round pick in 2023, has caught 55 passes for 539 yards but has yet to score a touchdown in his two seasons with the Panthers.
This trade could help strengthen the Cowboys' wide receiver group, but its impact may be limited. The bigger concern is that quarterback Dak Prescott is likely headed to injured reserve with a hamstring injury, which will keep him out for at least the next four games. With Prescott sidelined, it’s unclear how much Mingo can contribute to turning the season around.
In 24 games with the Panthers, Mingo never had more than six catches or 69 yards in a single game, and he didn’t score any touchdowns. So, trading a fourth-round pick for him might seem like an overpay. For comparison, last year the Cowboys traded a fourth-round pick to the 49ers for quarterback Trey Lance, who hasn’t played yet. That trade also meant the Cowboys missed out on picking a running back. Ironically, Dak Prescott, the Cowboys' starting quarterback, was also a fourth-round pick.
Since 2016, the Cowboys have used 11 fourth-round picks. Out of those, five players—Prescott, defensive end Dorance Armstrong, tight ends Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson, and center Tyler Biadasz—have become solid starters. The other six picks didn’t leave much of an impact.
For the trade to work out well, Mingo will need to prove he's more than just another one of the Cowboys' less successful fourth-round selections.
